Global Justice Film Festival 2011
November 4th 2011 – October 5th 2011
Winnipeg Art Gallery and the University of Winnipeg
The Global Justice Film Festival is taking place this year on November 4 and 5 in Winnipeg.
The festival will open on November 4 with a showing of the documentary Qapirangajuq: Inuit Knowledge and Climate Change at 7:00pm (doors open at 6:00pm), followed by a Question and Answer session with the directors via Skype at the Winnipeg Art Gallery.
All other films will be presented at the University of Winnipeg on November 5 from 9:00am to 5:00pm.

Manitoba Going Green Event

The website is aimed at Manitoba institutions (Regional Health Authorities, Municipalities, School Divisions, Campuses, Crown Corporations and more) to help them make green, ethical and fair choices in their procurement policies and activities. Whether you are interested in “Lake Friendly”, “Fair Trade”, “Green Products” or “No Sweat”, you’ll want to sit in on this session with members of the committee who put the site together.

CWY is working in partnerships with Kijabe Environmental Volunteers (KENVO). Together we will be celebrating CWY’s 40th anniversary in Winnipeg by showing an AWARD-WINNING FILM THAT CONNECTS ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION WITH HUMAN RIGHTS
TAKING ROOT: The Vision of Wangari Maathai, tells the dramatic story of Kenyan Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai whose simple act of planting trees grew into a nationwide movement to safeguard the environment, protect human rights, and defend democracy.
What? FREE Film Screening in Celebration of CWY’s 40th anniversary
When? Friday Oct. 21st
Time? Doors open at 7pm for a lively discussion about CWY and KENVO. Come learn about the important work being done by both organizations to inspire youth to be more active and engaged global citizens.
Why? Why show a film to celebrate CWY’s 40th anniversary? The movie will be shown to encourage all of us to utilize Maathai’s model for sustainable development, integrated problem solving and citizen empowerment. TAKING ROOT captures a world-view in which nothing is perceived as impossible and presents an awe-inspiring profile of Maathai’s thirty-year journey of courage to protect the integrally connected issues of the environment, human rights, and democracy.

Lunch and Learn with the Mondetta Charity Foundation
Kish Mohda and Kali Guillas from the Mondetta Charity Foundation will make a presentation on their work with school children in Uganda, where they have recently visited. MCIC’s Community Solidarity Fund has supported an MCF project at the Kampala City Council School where it delivers feeding and educational programs and is renovating the existing building. The construction of foldable walls at the school will allow for the creation of more classrooms.

Community Solidarity Fund Orientation Sessions

The Community Solidarity Fund provides funding to Manitoba not-for-profit, community-based groups involved in development projects overseas. The fund is available to non-member and MCIC affiliate members and provides another way to help Manitobans work together with partners around the world.
For those interested in applying for the fund, the next orientation sessions are scheduled for Wednesday, October 12th from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m and Thursday, October 13th from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. These will be held at MCIC’s offices, 302-280 Smith St., Winnipeg, just south of Portage Avenue. Deo Namwira, International Grants Manager for the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) will speak about the programs his organization is involved in around the world. In particular, MCIC supports MCC in its rural development work in Bangladesh, and has recently also supported their peace-building projects in Uganda and Lebanon.
